Preserve a Voucher Specimen! The Critical Need for Integrating Natural History Collections in Infectious Disease Studies

نویسندگان

چکیده

Despite being nearly 10 months into the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic, definitive animal host for SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), causal agent of COVID-19, remains unknown. Unfortunately, similar problems exist other betacoronaviruses, and no vouchered specimens to corroborate species identification most these pathogens.

No specimen left behind: industrial scale digitization of natural history collections

Traditional approaches for digitizing natural history collections, which include both imaging and metadata capture, are both labour- and time-intensive. Mass-digitization can only be completed if the resource-intensive steps, such as specimen selection and databasing of associated information, are minimized. Digitization of larger collections should employ an "industrial" approach, using the pr...

Paleozoology’s Dependence on Natural History Collections

Paleozoology (zooarchaeology and paleontology) depends on natural history collections, or comparative collections, of skeletons of known taxonomy. These skeletons permit taxonomic identification of paleozoological specimens, facilitate identification of taphonomically (perimortem and postmortem) modified and abnormal or pathological specimens, and provide metric data for monitoring clinal varia...

The Stability of Natural History Specimens In Fluid-preserved Collections

Natural history museum collections are incomparable storehouses of geological, biological, and genetic resources throughout the world. Some of the materials composing the specimens in these collections are vulnerable to deterioration when stored in fluids. Samples were taken from liquid storage media surrounding mammal specimens in the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), Smithsonian Inst...

Sherborn's foraminiferal studies and their influence on the collections at the Natural History Museum, London.

Sherborn's work on the Foraminifera clearly provided the initial spark to compile the major indexes for which he is famous. Contact and help from famous early micropalaeontologists such as T. Rupert Jones and Fortescue William Millett led Sherborn to produce his Bibliography of Foraminifera and subsequently a two-part Index of Foraminiferal Genera and Species. Edward Heron-Allen, whose mentor w...
